Pears in Crystal Watercolor

Another painting finished and framed in time for my Autumn Art & Jewelry Show was my “Pears in Crystal” watercolor. When I was deciding what paintings to showcase as new paintings in my show I wanted a painting whose subject matter was something other than nature, not that pears aren’t nature. This painting is one I started in a workshop and since I don’t do many still life paintings this fit my criteria. It took a couple more hours to finalize.

The contrast of the crumpled checked fabric with the lace and crystal appealed to me. It added an interesting dimension of color, form and depth. An earthy almost childlike elegance that goes beyond the sophistication of the crystal and lace.

Pears have found their way into my paintings as far back as when I was teaching freehand design on ceramics and porcelain, over twenty-five years ago. The subtle, earthy tones of the pears are warm and inviting. From a decorating point of view pears are usually good subject matter for kitchen and dining areas.
