What a beautiful summer we’re having in Colorado. It has been twenty-two years since I moved here and I don’t remember a rainier summer. I’ve been watching humming birds fluttering around their feeder. It seems I have a Rufous among the Ruby Red Throats again this year. If you haven’t seen a Rufous they are special. Their feathers glisten like copper when the sunlight touches them. My little “Rubies” aren’t at all happy with the aggressive Rufous who keeps chasing them from the food.
It has begun to rain and the humming birds continue to play among the raindrops. It surprises me that they would be out in the rain. Doesn’t it seem that a raindrop hitting a humming bird might equate to a human being hit by a bowling ball?
The sound of thunder is echoing in the distance and I can see lightning over the plains. Now it is beginning to hail, small mini-pea size hail. I love watching the way the droplets of water disperse as the hail hits the puddles of water on the glass top patio table.
The humming birds seem to have found shelter in the scrub oak that borders the patio. The lush green leaves must be enough to protect these tiny creatures from the elements. It won’t be long before those lush green leaves on the scrub oak will turn to glorious colors of golds and deep crimson with just a touch of green. These magnificent autumn colors were the inspiration for my Collage I series abstracts and fine art note cards. Check out my abstract art series. Boxed cards make great gifts as well.
